Collections Workshop: Slavery & Citizenship

June 11, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT

| Free

In partnership with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company’s production of Branden Jacob-Jenkins’ play An Octoroon, the Kiplinger Research Library at the Carnegie Library will host a collections workshop on slavery and Emancipation. Join us on Saturday June 11th from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. as we explore how archival records frame our understanding of slavery. Participants will learn about and view petitions for freedom, pamphlets, photographs, lithographs, and jail records. Staff members from the Historical Society will also guide visitors through the impact of slavery on the District of Columbia.

Let a newly gained context for 19th-century slavery enhance your experience of An Octoroon. Attendees will have an opportunity to see the 3p.m. show at a discounted rate.

Learn more about An Octoroon, written by D.C. native Branden Jacob-Jenkins, and purchase tickets here: http://www.woollymammoth.net/connectivity/)
