The Historical Society of Washington, D.C.’s juried competition and exhibition, “For the Record: Artfully Historic D.C.”, is accepting submissions of artwork and photography through February 1. This exciting new program will help to capture and preserve scenes of the District’s changing cityscape. Co-sponsors include the DC Preservation League and the Capitol Hill Art League.

The Historical Society has a long tradition of collecting artworks that depict life in Washington. Many of the collections such as those of photographer John Wymer and watercolorist Lily Spandorf provide a unique visual record of the District’s history. Artists interested in submitting to For the Record should use the DC Preservation League’s list of Most Endangered Places as subjects for their artwork and photography. The Capitol Hill Art League is helping guide the competition. More information about the online submission process can be found on the Historical Society’s website.

Jurors will pick 75 artworks for the exhibit and the printed catalogue. The top five winning artists receive a financial award and their artworks will be formally accessioned into the Society’s permanent collection. The exhibit will open on April 22, 2015 and close at the Historical Society’s 121st anniversary party on May 27, 2015, which will feature a raffle of the remaining artworks.

The competition’s jury consists of individuals from: FotoDC, The George Washington University, National Building Museum, National Geographic Society, National Park Service, National Portrait Gallery, NEWSEUM, and The Phillips Collection.
